Sometimes ideas for projects come from strange places… This one came from a review. It was a review of an ambient artist on The CerebralRift that was a quirky concept the artist had been experimenting with: the idea of re-contextualizing their works by swapping tracks around. It’s was kind of like the artist was trying to remix their own work, and yet not really.
The thing was, it started me thinking about what is considered remixing? Not in terms of the engineering tricks and devices employed in making a longer version of a song, but what constitutes remixing from an artistic standpoint. When does a remix become transformative enough that it is no longer a remix, but a new piece of work?
As my mind wandered, I started asking myself: what if a bunch of artists remixed each other, but (a) they didn’t know who’s work they were remixing, and (b) they hadn’t heard the original track before? That was the birth of The Double Blindfold project… The idea of a group of artists submitting their pieces in completed form, along with the multi-track (ie, individual instruments) or samples. Then the multi-tracks / samples were sent to another artist to create a new track.
I thought it was an interesting concept. But, I wasn’t done just yet. There was something else that could make the project more interesting: what if the artists were given a random set of samples and multi-tracks from all of the artists in the project, and asked to create a new piece.
The results are in front of you in this project…
